General FAQs, security, backup, export, etc.

  • Is our data backed up in the case of an emergency?

Yes.  We subscribe to a backup service who backs up our data nightly, and in an emergency, can provide data restoration services 24/7 from their off-site data facilities..

  • Is haiku LMS reliable, secure and confidential?  Is our data safe? Where is the data hosted?

Yes, yes and yes.  We subscribe to two different services to make sure our servers are running the most recent patches and updates.  Our hosting partner is Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com/), one of the leading providers of Managed Hosting, located in San Antonio, Texas.

  • Can we export our data in case we don't want to use haiku LMS anymore? What format is the data in?

At this time, it is possible to export Attendance Book and Gradebook information.  This summer we will be adding Assessment Questions to this list.

  • Can we install haiku LMS on our own server?

haiku LMS is an on-demand service.  Due to our single network hosting setup we can offer our services at a much lower cost than comparable installable Learning Management Systems.  To read more about the advantags of On Demand please read this excellent blog post by ZDNet's Phil Wainwright.

Billing and account management

  • How do we update or change our credit card?

Individual Subscribers can update their credit card information by logging into their account and clicking the My Account link at the top of every haiku LMS page.  On the Subscription Tab you will see your current card listed and you can change it by clicking on Change Card.

  • Can we pay yearly or via invoice?

If you are an organization, yes. If you are an individual subscriber you will have to pay monthly, no annual contract required.

Roster

  • How do I add students, parents or teachers to my class?

In any class you can click on Class Management in the right hand corner of your screen.  You can then select the Roster from the drop down menu.  You will then be able to add students, parents or co-teachers by clicking on the tabs at the top of the window.  Students and Parents can be added either by distributing an Open Invitation code or by a code unique to the individual.

  • What is the class owner?

The class owner is usually the account that first created a class.  The class owner is the holder of the license for the class, and is thus considered the owner of any files associated with a class when disk space, student account limits, and active class limitiations are applied.

  • Can I integrate haiku LMS with our existing student information system (SIS/SMS)?

Yes. As long as you can export roster and class information from your SIS/SMS then you will be able to import them into haiku LMS.  In some cases we have worked with third parties to integrate directly so that imports can happen automatically on a nightly basis.

Classes

  • How can I see how a student sees my class?

The preview button in the upper right hand corner of your class provides an easy way to see what your students (and parents) see when visiting your class.

Permissions

  • What can the public and search engines see of my class?

When you publish a class you can specify whether it is Public or Private.  For Private classes nothing can be seen by the public and search engines.  If a class is Public then the Pages and Calendar tabs are visible.  All other tabs are not accessible unless a user logs in.

  • How can I turn components of haiku LMS on or off?

If you click on Class Management and then Class Settings, a new dialog will open. You can then click on the Features tab to view an overview of which features are turned on and off.  Click on Add to add missing components or Remove to hide a component.

Tracking

  • How do I know how much my site is being used?  Can I track individual users as they use my site?

There is no current way to view these statistics, but there are plans to implement tracking features in haiku LMS for Summer/Fall 2008.

Interoperability

  • Is your software SCORM or compatabile with other learning modules?

Not currently, but plans are in the works.  If you have comments on learning modules you would like to see us integrate, please leave us a note in our user suggestion tool.
